Artist's Bio
My current body work uses the simplest of forms to explore and experiment with the range of effects possible in atmospheric ceramic firings. This series started out as a simple study while teaching a firing class. I was asking myself how to get my students to focus on the surfaces without being sidetracked by the shape of the pieces they were on. The answer was screens of course, though ceramic ones instead of digital, and I was immediately drawn to the old tube style TV, with its subtle curve. The first and most fundamental pieces are still called this, “screens”. Using pit, saggar, and other lowfire techniques I try to showcase the depth and color possible on pieces that don’t distract with the need for intricacy. Next on to wood and soda firings.
